Facial muscle anatomy: why your assessment comes first

How brow position, neighbouring muscles and everyday expression guide a personal plan.

Muscles work together

Facial muscles do not act as isolated squares on a diagram. The forehead helps lift the eyebrows, the frown muscles draw them inward and down, and the muscles around the eyes contribute to smiling and eye closure. We observe these relationships before recommending a plan.

Look at rest and in movement

A still photograph can show a line but cannot explain the whole pattern of movement. We assess brow position, eyelid support and the way your face changes as you speak and smile. Previous treatments and any sense of heaviness are useful parts of that conversation.

Why forehead planning is individual

Some people recruit their forehead to help support the brows. Low horizontal forehead lines and a low or heavy brow can therefore call for a particularly conservative discussion. An assessment considers placement, the amount selected and how much movement should remain, rather than following an identical map for everyone.

The surrounding tissues matter too

Skin thickness, tissue support and facial proportions influence the plan. At the mouth and chin, assessment also considers lip movement and function. At the jaw, chewing strength, muscle bulk and the support of the lower cheeks can all be relevant. The aim is to understand the concern in its anatomical setting.

A clear explanation before a shared decision

Where treatment is appropriate, your doctor explains its intended role and the relevant side effects. This includes the possibility of an effect on neighbouring muscles or unwanted weakness with a muscle-directed treatment. Understanding those considerations helps you choose a measured plan and know what will be reviewed afterwards.
