Anti wrinkle treatment: how does it work and what should you expect?
It is natural to have questions about anti wrinkle treatment, especially if you want to look refreshed and still feel like yourself. You do not need to arrive knowing which treatment to choose; understanding your options is what the consultation is for. The consultation is an opportunity to discuss gentle softening of expression lines, the movement you would like to keep and what is appropriate for your face.
What is anti wrinkle treatment?
This usually means injections of botulinum toxin, a medicine that temporarily reduces activity in selected muscles. Botulinum toxin is a prescription only medicine. It is one possible option after a consultation, and a consultation may or may not lead to a prescription or treatment. Treatment decisions should follow an individual assessment by an appropriately qualified clinician.
How does the medicine work?
Botulinum toxin reduces the release of acetylcholine, a chemical messenger that tells a muscle to contract. Less contraction can mean less folding of the skin above that muscle. It does not fill a hollow or add volume, and its effect gradually wears off.
Which lines can it help?
Lines that become more visible when you frown, raise your eyebrows or smile may respond. Lines already present when your face is resting may soften less. Skin texture, sun damage and loss of volume are different concerns, so the same treatment will not address them all.
Will I still look like myself?
Preserving expression can be part of the treatment plan. Discuss the movements you want to keep, as well as the lines you want to soften. For some people, a small, carefully selected dose may be appropriate to soften lines while keeping useful movement. The amount is chosen after assessing how your muscles support the eyebrows and eyelids.
What should happen at the consultation?
Your clinician should ask about your health, medicines, previous treatments and expectations, and examine your face at rest and in motion. At London Finsbury Clinic, we explain how the treatment works and why a more conservative approach may suit your face. Ask about alternatives, costs, risks and follow up, and take time to decide.
When will I see a change?
Results are not immediate. Changes develop over the following days and are commonly assessed around two weeks. Effects often last around three to four months, although response and duration vary. A review helps assess the outcome; additional treatment is not automatically necessary.
What should I know before deciding?
We explain possible side effects clearly so you can make an informed choice. These include temporary bruising, swelling, tenderness or headache, and sometimes unwanted weakness, uneven movement or brow or eyelid drooping. Contact us about unexpected changes. Rare breathing, swallowing or speaking difficulties need emergency medical help.
Who will guide me through my treatment choices?
At London Finsbury Clinic, our doctor has many years of experience training other practitioners in treatment planning and injection techniques. That teaching experience informs a thoughtful approach to your care: understanding your anatomy, explaining the options clearly and choosing a plan suited to you.
You are welcome to ask questions, share any worries and take time to decide. We will explain what treatment may achieve, its limitations and risks, and why a lighter approach, or no treatment, may sometimes be the most appropriate choice.
