Hair thinning can affect confidence, and a useful plan starts with understanding the cause. We review the pattern, timescale, scalp condition, medical history and current hair-care or treatment routine before discussing options.

For selected people with pattern hair loss, a scalp relaxer may be discussed as an additional option after a medical consultation. The aim is to support the scalp environment and consider whether it could complement a wider hair-preservation plan.

This is different from a salon conditioning treatment applied to the hair shafts. Any prescription option is considered individually, and the consultation may lead to another approach or no treatment.

Comfort, personally considered.

We explain each stage, check how you feel and allow time for questions. Your doctor selects suitable preparation and comfort support for the agreed plan. You can pause whenever you need.

Understand your options

Start with the cause

Pattern hair loss, temporary shedding, inflammation and scarring conditions need different decisions. Your doctor considers whether further investigation or specialist assessment should come first.

Understand the option

Scalp muscle relaxation has been investigated as an adjunct for androgenetic alopecia. Proposed explanations include reducing tension around the scalp and effects on signalling around hair follicles. These are developing areas of research, rather than a single proven explanation for every patient.

What the research shows

Clinical studies, including work from South Korea, have explored this approach for pattern hair loss. Some have reported improvements in hair counts or shedding. The findings provide a reason for an informed discussion with your doctor, while larger controlled studies are still needed.

A 2020 study by Shon and colleagues at Dankook University examined intradermal treatment and follicle-related signalling. A later randomized study compared treatment approaches across different scalp areas. Research uses different techniques and schedules, so a result from one protocol should not be presented as the expected outcome of a clinic course.

Evidence is mixed: a 2025 randomized trial did not find significant improvements in hair density with the tested protocols. We explain this alongside encouraging findings so that you can judge the potential value of an additional treatment for your own situation.

A realistic plan with a positive purpose

Hair preservation

Discuss whether an additional scalp approach could support your existing plan for pattern thinning and help you monitor change over time.

Scalp concerns

Tell us about tightness, discomfort, sweating or oiliness. These concerns are assessed individually rather than assumed to have the same cause as hair loss.

Measured progress

Consistent photographs and planned review help separate a useful response from everyday variation. The goal and review point are agreed before treatment.

Your consultation and care

1. Review

Bring details of current medicines, supplements, previous treatments and any recent illness or changes in shedding. Your doctor examines the scalp and discusses your priorities.

2. Decide together

If a prescription option is appropriate, your doctor explains the off-label nature of the use, alternatives, expected limitations and individual risks before consent. No medicine or dose is selected automatically by booking.

3. Plan and follow up

If you proceed, comfort support, aftercare and the timing of review are explained. We avoid an automatic repeat schedule and assess whether continuing offers value.

Comfort, aftercare and suitability

If an injection-based option is selected, small needle sensations, temporary tenderness, redness, bruising or headache can occur. There are also medicine-specific risks, including unwanted muscle weakness; these are explained during the prescribing assessment. Seek urgent medical help for difficulty swallowing, speaking or breathing.

Tell your doctor about pregnancy or breastfeeding, neuromuscular conditions, infection, previous reactions and all medicines. Sudden patchy loss, painful or inflamed scalp, or rapidly progressing symptoms may require investigation before cosmetic care.

Follow the individual aftercare instructions and contact the clinic with concerns. Do not stop established hair-loss medication without advice from its prescriber. Complimentary scalp-care and skincare routine advice is included.

Your questions, answered

What is this consultation for?

It is for people who want a medical discussion of hair thinning, scalp concerns and possible additional treatment options, including a scalp muscle-relaxation approach when appropriate.

Can it improve hair loss?

Some studies have reported improved hair counts or reduced shedding in selected patients with pattern hair loss. It is an emerging adjunct with variable results, not an established cure for every cause of thinning.

Is there Korean research?

Yes. Shon and colleagues at Dankook University published a clinical study in 2020. The research looked at hair counts and a possible follicle-signalling mechanism.

Is this the same as a salon hair-smoothing treatment?

No. A salon conditioning product acts on hair shafts. This consultation concerns medical assessment of the scalp and hair loss.

Is this a licensed hair-loss treatment?

The prescription medicine discussed for this approach is used off-label for hair loss. Your doctor explains that distinction and considers the evidence and alternatives before any prescription.

Is it suitable for women?

Suitability depends on the diagnosis, medical history and evidence for the proposed option. Much of the published research has involved men with androgenetic alopecia, so results should not be assumed to apply equally to everyone.

How quickly might I see a change?

Hair-cycle changes take time. Studies commonly assess outcomes over several months, and no visible improvement is guaranteed. The clinic agrees a realistic review point with you.

Can I combine it with my current plan?

A combined approach may be appropriate. Tell the doctor about all existing treatments so they can assess compatibility and coordinate care.

Should I book a course straight away?

A free consultation is the first step. A course is only considered after assessment; three sessions do not guarantee a particular result, and the timing is personalised.

What are the guide fees?

The proposed clinic options are £349 for one session and £947 for three, subject to suitability and the agreed plan. The free consultation is £0.

Will this replace proven hair-loss treatments?

Not automatically. The doctor discusses established options and whether an adjunct is worth considering for your diagnosis and goals.

What is included in my care?

Medical assessment, an explanation of the selected option, appropriate comfort support, included aftercare and complimentary scalp-care advice. Additional investigations or services are discussed separately.
