What should you do about lip filler migration?

Filler migration means product has moved or redistributed beyond the intended treatment area. Fullness above the lip border, a persistent ridge or an uneven contour can prompt a review, but swelling and lumps have other possible causes too. An examination is needed before deciding what has happened or how to manage it.

Why individual anatomy matters

Lip shape, tissue condition and muscle movement differ between individuals. Your doctor assesses the lips both at rest and during expression, alongside previous filler, treatment dates and the change you want. Product selection, the amount placed and injection technique are part of that assessment. A conservative, anatomically informed plan can help manage risk, but no product, quantity or technique guarantees that migration will not occur.

When there is already unwanted filler

Adding more filler is not automatically the right response. If existing hyaluronic acid filler is contributing to the problem, Your doctor may recommend discussing dissolution before considering further enhancement. Dissolving is a medical treatment requiring its own assessment, consent and explanation of risks, including allergic reactions. It may require more than one visit and does not promise an immediate or complete reset.

Why we may recommend a staged approach

After substantial migration or repeated treatment, we prefer to reassess the tissue rather than rush into reinjection. Previous filler distribution and tissue changes vary between people and may affect the next plan. The reason for the original problem must be considered, because dissolving alone does not guarantee it cannot recur.

A staged plan may involve addressing unwanted filler, allowing swelling to settle, reviewing the lips and only then deciding whether any further filler is appropriate. Your doctor determines when the tissue has settled sufficiently for reassessment. Recovery and clinical findings guide the timing; further filler is not an automatic next step.

Hydration and muscle assessment are separate decisions

We consider skin quality, hydration and muscle activity during consultation. Where hydration treatment or another medical option is appropriate, its purpose, suitability and timing are discussed individually. Skin boosters should not be presented as a proven way to prevent migration or as a required step after dissolving. Some patients need a longer rest period or no further injectable treatment.

Review first, then agree the next step

Bring details of previous products and treatments to your consultation. If further filler is suitable after recovery, the product, placement and a conservative amount are agreed around your anatomy and goals. Seek urgent medical attention for severe or unusual pain, skin colour changes or vision symptoms after an injection; these require prompt assessment rather than waiting for a routine migration review.
